About This Course: All parents raising young children from infancy to 8 years old need to know about child development and growth. It is especially important for foster and adoptive parents caring for children who are delayed in their development because of trauma, abuse or neglect. This course gives an overview of the developmental milestones found throughout early childhood and touches upon special topics of interest to resource families such as programs to help detect developmental delays, special education topics, signs of autism and the effects of prenatal exposure to alcohol or drugs.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Participants in the class will:
- Know the major development milestones of infancy and young toddlers and will understand the role of the Infant Learning Program.
- Know the major development milestones of the preschool and early grade school years and understand the important issues around learning and school issues.
- Understand how trauma, abuse and neglect interrupts development and impacts a child’s development and growth and learn some basic parenting strategies to help children with some more difficult behaviors.
