Core is a required class for foster and adoptive families in Alaska. This 12 credit-hour course (plus homework worth 5 additional credit-hours), offered over a Tuesday and a Thursday evening and 6 hours on Saturday, will cover the core elements that foster and adoptive families typically face. We will look at working with the state, working with birthparents, and working with doctors, therapists and the schools. We will examine transracial issues, grief and self-esteem issues, trauma’s effect on child development and behavior, and building healing skills and techniques related to adoption and foster care.
